Types of Roof Windows for Pitched Roof Homes & Properties

There are many types of roof windows, each with its own unique selling points. If you're considering replacing your old pitched roof window or installing a new one, it’s important to understand the different types of pitched roof windows available on the market to ensure you pick the right one that works for your budget and home. In this blog post, we’ll look at the four most common pitched roof window types:

Roof Skylight

A skylight, also known as a rooflight, is a type of window installed on a flat roof or a pitched roof. It allows more natural light and fresh air while also increasing your home's aesthetics and view of the outdoors. They are available in a wide range of shapes, sizes, specifications, types, and glazing options.  For example, some skylights can be opened to let in the fresh air, while others are designed only to bring in more natural light.

Centre Pivot Window

A centre pivot window is a type of roof window that is mounted on a central axis, allowing it to rotate 360 degrees. This allows for better air ventilation and more daylight to enter the room since the roof window can be rotated and opened fully from the top or the bottom. So, even if the roof window is positioned at a high level, the bottom handle makes it easy to open.

Centre pivot windows are usually a preferred choice for pitched roof homes—especially for loft conversions—as they are easy to install, operate and maintain.

Top Hung Window

A top-hung window is a type of roof window that is hinged from the top of the frame and opens from below. It functions the same way as other roof windows, bringing in more natural light and fresh air while increasing the internal profile of your home. However, they are more suitable for bathrooms, kitchens, and areas with restricted spaces that produce steam, smoke, and condensation, allowing for proper ventilation and an emergency exit if necessary. In addition, because top-hung windows can only be opened from the bottom, they can be more challenging to clean and maintain than centre-pivot roof windows.

Balcony Roof Window

As the name suggests, a balcony window converts a large roof window into a standing platform, with the upper section of the frame opening outwards and the lower half unfolding into a balcony with side railings for safety. It can fill any room with large amounts of natural light, and when opened, the balcony roof window allows for maximum air circulation with better access to outdoor viewing. Balcony roof windows are suitable for pitched roof properties as they can brighten up loft spaces while improving aesthetic appeal and resale value. They are, however, the most expensive roof windows on the market, with prices well over £1,000.

There are many other types of roof windows available for pitched roof homes and properties. The most common ones have already been mentioned above, which can also be combined to create a unique look for your home. After all, the best roof windows are the ones that allow for plenty of daylight and fresh air circulation while also fitting your budget and personal taste.
