Practical roof window blinds

Many homes now have loft conversions as the price of property has driven many people to make the most of what they have instead of moving up the property ladder.

Loft conversions make use of the unused space you have in your home by adding an extra room,

which can be used as an extra bedroom, a study or even an entertainment room. However, for all these purposes you will have to add a blind to the window to block out any unwanted light.

Loft window roof blinds differ greatly than blinds for standard windows. The blind has to fit neatly to the window because of the angle at which the window is fitted into the roofline. This means the blinds you choose for your loft windows must be designed to accurately fit onto the window. Most loft windows have a manufacturer name plate on the opening part of the window. On this there is usually a model number of the type of window you have. This can be used by a roof window blind manufacturer to determine the size of window you have, so a suitable loft window blind can be manufactured.

Or at least that used to be the case.

New roof window blind options

As well as the manufacturers standard blinds, emerging brands like Duratech (manufactured by VKR Holdings, who also make Velux roof windows) can supply roof window blinds which will fit standard window sizes and which are available in a huge range of colours.

Velux themselves also has a large range of assorted patterns, although many of them (the zebra pattern, for example) look quite brash and would only be suitable occasionally.  They also have a bluetooth controller that can be used to open and close the blinds remotely.  This is particularly useful where the ceiling is very tall and the roof window blinds would normally be out of reach.
