Chestertorch is a high-quality, multi-layered bituminised waterproof system designed for various flat roofing projects, including new builds, refurbishments, cold roofs, and warm roofs with vapour control layers and insulation. These roofing felt membranes feature a polyester core saturated and coated with modified bitumen, with an upper surface finished in either light sand or slate mineral. When integrated into a properly designed and installed multi-layer system and maintained per BS 8217:2005, Chestertorch membranes have a life expectancy of over 10 years.

Suitability

Chestertorch Plain is a sand-surfaced membrane suitable for use both as an underlayer and a cap sheet. When used as a cap sheet, it requires UV protection through premium grade solar reflective paint or suitable walkway tiles designed for bituminous systems. Chestertorch polyester cap sheets perform well in multi-layer built-up roofing systems, especially on roofs with high insulation values and significant thermal movement.

Installation Guidelines

Install this product according to the manufacturer’s recommendations and all relevant national standards and codes of practice, including BS 8217:2005. Note that installation should not occur at temperatures below 5°C.

Mineral Surface Protection

Certain Chestertorch membranes feature mineral granules on the upper surface, sourced from natural quarrying. The colour of these minerals may vary based on quarry seam depths and extraction positions, though weathering and ageing will reduce the visibility of these variations over time.

Maintenance and Repair

Routine inspection, cleaning, and maintenance should follow the recommendations in BS 8217:2005. If the membrane is damaged during construction or later, repairs should be made using the same materials to ensure consistent performance of the built-up membranes.

Handling and Storage

Store the material vertically on a firm, flat surface, and transport it standing on end to prevent damage.

Observe Health and Safety regulations at all times per HSE and industry guidance. Contractors should produce specific Risk Assessments and Method Statements to ensure compliance with Working at Heights, Fire Safety, and Manual Handling regulations.
