Installing roofing felt on a flat roof

Installing roofing felt on a flat roof is not a job for everyone. Sometimes, it is best left to professionals. It is important to note that the decking or boarding on your roof needs to be of the highest quality for your roofing felt to perform to the best of its ability.

However, if you still plan to install the felt on your roof yourself, refer to the tips mentioned below.

Things you will need

  • Chipping material
  • Strong cutting knife
  • Nails
  • Felt
  • Hammer

Ensure that you have the aforementioned tools and accessories before you start the installation procedure.

Tip 1: Preparing the foundation

Ensure that the plywood base is in good condition before you start with the installation procedure. Any rotten decking should be replaced before laying the felt. Once you feel that the decking is suitable you can start the installation procedure.

Tip 2: Getting rid of the previous nails

Ensure that you get rid of any nails, adhesive or felt that was left behind from the previous installation. Also allow wet plywood to dry out before you install the roofing felt. There should be no debris of any kind on the decking prior to installing the new roofing felt.

Tip 3: Laying the felt

With the help of galvanized 20mm clout nails, install the roofing felt with large heads on every 160mm along the planks. The felt should be straight and flat. Begin nailing the felt on the centre of the sheet and gradually work your way outwards. Avoid nailing the edge of the roof as this area will overlap the second layer of the felt. Once this is done, you can waterproof the joins using a tar based sealing agent. You can strengthen the cover with gravel chippings.
