#FiveOfOurFavourite Loft Conversions

The loft for many houses is the area up out of the way where things are dumped and forgotten about or the place where they only go if they have to.  But with a little inspiration and the right features, a loft can become a useful part of the house and a real pleasure to visit.  Here are some of our favourite ideas.

The Bathroom loft

Before picture:

Before the loft conversion

The owners of this house needed to make more room as they had a baby on the way, so they converted the loft to a bathroom.  The slanted and angled nature of the room wasn't a problem with the correct placement of the main features, such as the bath in a nook as less headroom is needed above it.

They added a large window feature opposite the bath to allow plenty of room in with slatted blinds on them to add privacy when in use.

By making one of the shaped nooks into the shower cubicle, this makes perfect use of its height for a large and luxurious shower area.

The Bedroom loft

One of the most popular uses for a converted loft is to transform it into a bedroom.  It can make a perfect master bedroom due to the extra space but adapting to those odd angles caused by the roof beams can take a little imagination.  In this bedroom loft conversion, the use of a patterned wallpaper on one wall makes the slanted wall into a real feature and placing the bed against it means that the sloping is less of an issue.

The natural nooks of the roof can even make a little quiet space away from the main room where a reading chair can be placed.

Making the loft into the kids' bedroom can be a great idea when they are a little older as it gives them the feeling of privacy and leaves a little more space downstairs.  It also allows the addition of sofas for them to lounge on with their friends and room to put a TV and games console in place without taking up the downstairs TV.  Consider big windows to let in plenty of light but ones that only open so far to save any problems

Playroom lofts

Another fantastic way to use the loft, even a small and narrow one, can be to transform it into a playroom for the kids.  It allows them to have a space away from the rest of the house where they can store all their favourite toys or games and can be adapted, as they get older to go from toy room to game room with a pool table or similar gear.

Entertainment loft

If the kids don't need a playroom, perhaps the adults do.  One idea is to make the loft into a home theatre with a flat wall perfect for the large-screen TV and sound system while the seating can fit into the sloped areas with enough room to get up and down without hanging heads.

Home office loft

When you work from home, sometimes getting the space for equipment and the quiet for concentration can be an issue.  By converting the loft to a work space, you can spread as much as you need, leave all your stuff after you without needing to tidy up to use the table for the evening meal and shut yourself off into a quiet place to concentration on your latest creation.  By making the beams a feature of the room with brightly coloured paint, this highlights the natural features of the room.

Study Room loft conversion

Another workspace idea makes use of the nice views from your home by placing windows that allow in plenty of light and to watch the world go by for inspiration.  By fitting the desk under the slanted section, the lower roof stops being an issue and by decorating in warm colours, the light coming through the windows is enhanced.
