Choosing a roofing contractor can be a tricky business. It's always worth going with a recommendation, but if you have to start from scratch, you'll need to be prepared to ask potential contractors a few questions before you sign an agreement.

It's always a good idea to ask potential roofing companies or contractors for references. If they are happy to present you with some names and addresses, you'll be able to find out a little more about their level of expertise and workmanship. Call the references and speak to them about any specific concerns that you have, most people will be happy to give a minute or two of their time. Checking online for reviews can occasionally be a mixed blessing and if you do, check the date on the review as old reviews can resurface even if the problems mentioned were solved to everyone's satisfaction.
Get quotes from several Roofers
You always need to obtain at least three quotes from different roofers before deciding on a roofing contractor or roofing company. What may initially seem a good price may be well over the odds for the job that needs doing. By getting three quotes you get a good spread and any anomalous quotes can easily be seen. It isn't just the problem of having one of the three quoting an excessively high price. It is as important to know if one of the quote is unreasonably low! If someone is quoting a significant amount below the average price they may be cutting corners, employing people with limited experience, using substandard supplies or are simply missing important repairs.
Public liability insurance for Roofers
Ask to see your roofer's public liability insurance certificate. They need this to pay compensation in case of an accident whether the injury or damage is to their equipment or employees or whether the damage is to your home or to your family.
Agree the price for the work and have a schedule in place
It's always worth having an agreement in writing about the works that are to take place. Any deviation from this by either the contractor or yourself should be liable to a pre-agreed penalty.
Payment
Before you start the works, agree how the contractor will be paid. Never pay the total amount upfront for any works done. You should expect to pay some money before the works start however, to cover the costs of the roofing supplies.
