An introduction to shingling a roof

Shingling a roof can be a tedious process and choosing the right kind of roof shingles only adds to a homeowner's woes. It can greatly affect the appearance and look of the house and choosing the wrong roofing shingles can make your home look like a circus tent.

Selecting the right kind of shingles ensures a good appearance and a long lasting roof which can withstand harsh climatic conditions. The problem is that with the wide variety of shingles available in the market it can be quite confusing for you to choose the right ones amongst them.

The first kind of roofing shingles we will discuss are composite shingles. These are probably the most popular kind and are made from a mixture of various materials. They are inexpensive and look good on most roofs but do not last very long, especially when compared to metal shingles. Copper shingles are a good option if you are willing to shell out some more money, as they are highly durable. Another kind is ceramic which is particularly good for warm climatic conditions, though it might create issues in the winter. Asphalt roofing shingles are very popular and also quite durable since they have a fibreglass backing, which makes them long lasting as they are flexible to changing weather conditions.

So there are a lot of options to shop around for. An inexpensive shingle may be the option for you, but may prove to cost more if it doesn't last very long. On the other hand a durable shingle may give you safety for a long term, but then again you wouldn't want the expense to go through the roof.
