Some basic information on the maintenance and installation of roofing felt

Roofing felt is commonly used on homes to protect the interior from moisture and humidity. This felt is installed beneath the shingles for added protection. Roofing felt lasts a long time if installed and maintained properly.

Mentioned below is some information on the installation and maintenance of roofing felt.

Roofing felt installation tips

Ensure that the roof is clean and dry: Roofing felt is commonly installed above the sheathing to protect it from inclement weather conditions. A wet sheathing will loosen the grip of your felt and possibly damage it.
Ensure that the sheathing is completely dry before you attempt to install roofing felt.

Overlapping the felt strips:
Ensure that you overlap the felt strips to get better protection from moisture and humidity. Overlapping the strips of felt is the only way to get the job done properly. It requires more material, but it is ultimately worth it. Do not attempt to cut corners.

Proper application: Remove any trapped air bubbles as this can cause problems in future. Take your time during installation and ensure that it is done accurately.

When to get maintenance done on roofing felt

If you begin to notice damp spots on your ceiling at home, it may indicate that your roofing felt is starting to fail. Over time, the material becomes porous so that eventually it lets a significant amount of moisture pass through the roof. Blisters, cracks and colour changes are some signs that you need to carry out maintenance on your roof. The damage can affect a part or the whole of the roofing felt. Identify the damaged area and install accordingly. For the most part, patching over a bad section with new roofing felt should solve the problem.
